Affordable Care Act (ACA)
The comprehensive legislation often called "Obamacare" is known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Short Term Medical (STM)
STM Insurance does not offer comprehensive medical coverage and does not meet the minimum essential coverage criteria set forth by the Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly referred to as "Obamacare." It's possible that STM insurance does not encompass all Essential Health Benefits, so it's crucial to review your plan thoroughly prior to enrolment. These plans typically require medical underwriting and often exclude pre-existing conditions, along with possibly imposing lifetime and/or annual limits on health benefits. Should your coverage end or you become ineligible, you might need to wait for an open enrolment period before you can obtain alternative health insurance coverage.
Fixed Indemnity/Limited Indemnity Plans
Indemnity Plans serve as an addition to health insurance but should not be considered as a substitute for health insurance or the minimum essential coverage mandated by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Typically, these plans do not cover pre-existing conditions—those health and other conditions present at the time of application—and usually offer a fixed benefit amount for services that are covered. If you are currently receiving (or are eligible for) Medicaid, the benefits from these plans could impact your Medicaid coverage or eligibility. It's advisable to consult with your Medicaid agency for further details.
